Recap: 5 à 7

by trulymadlydeeply On Thursday, May 06, 2010 1 comments
Last Friday a new collective took form at the residence of 4 creatives; we put our heads together, got our hearts excited, and within 4 days, hosted the first 5 à 7, displayed the following artists and their works ...

C'est quoi ce truc,  5 à 7?
The Statement

The Artists

A gentle, intense yet centered artist who has lived in hipster-territory since it was a major liability on your life to do so... His works are playful and poignant, detailed yet sweeping in pigment that float you from one bustling scene to another; connected by themes which seemingly haunt him, popping off the canvas, out of their screened lines to trace around you...
When I asked him how long he'd been working he replied "Since I was 5. I know that's what they all say but it's true."
When I asked him what motivates him to work, constantly, (his works and processes, and the artifacts of his daily life were living amongst one another. The separation between art and life, work and rest, did not make itself apparent) he took a beat, a pregnant moment, reflected and, seemingly teetering on the edge of tears, told me with clarity and a knowing in his voice, that he suspects it has to do with narcissism, with neurosis.

Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe #1, 2007 (see also, Manet)

Peter Park

I met Peter in our Art Since 1945 art history class. We, along with around 12 of our classmates and one fantastic, fabulous, insanely intelligent teacher (see: Filiz Burhan) had the pleasure of tripping out to Munich on an overnight train, Gare du Nord -> Munchen. As was the norm with Prof. Burhan, virtually each waking-daylight-filled moment in a city was spent dedicated to tracing the arch of art history as it was developed, now displayed, in whichever important capital we happened to be visiting. From there we hit Switzerland where, after a day of museum hopping, a small group of us, including Peter, bonded over defecting from the larger group by exploring the outer reaches of a somewhat uninspiring Basel. The little adventure we took made Switzerland a little less neutral.
Walking round the New York Times building last year, I ran into him, now enrolled in Hunter's MFA program.
His photographs from our Art History days always wowed me. Now, his works do too...

Works in Progress (aka that Exclusive sh*t)

Shannon O'Leary

White-collar assistant by day, quirky comic-heroine by night, I wanted a dash of black-on-white. I also wanted to finally get a glimpse of the much heard about, little seen work she produces. Shannon and I bonded as obviously outside-the-box colleagues in a too-buttoned-up work place. Each afternoon around 3, I'd take a little coffee break and meander to her desk to talk billing, Pepperidge Farms cookie collections (Distinct Chocolate variety, Orchard variety), art, music (her love for metal and metal shows), tarot and astrology, and whatever else we could think of to giggle over. She enjoys Swedish comic conventions and a good glass of red.

George Venson

A San Antonio, Texas native, George lives conveniently close. But that's not the only reason why he was included in the show ;-) . George loves the word subversive. Seemingly. And every time we speak, he's got some absolutely fascinating tidbit that I rush to add to my Misc file in the notes on my phone, for future research, of course. He loves awkward. The more 'off', the better. Mind you, he won't make an issue of it. But you'll know.
He didn't say a whole lot about the works he showcased the other night, but their impact goes beyond words. You'd even overlook them, if not for the fact that the room's center was filled with a deep-red screen, beautifully dividing the space, quietly leaving a mark on the night as it structured social circles North, South, East, West. If not for the sadistically hilarious sight of someone innocently sitting on the couch, a heavy lead pipe menacingly hanging over their unknowing head.

For this gilded piece he has one word: sad. Just, sad.

Mireille Moga

Ah, yes, family love. She's been taking pictures for as long as I've been able to wrap my head around the concept of "cool"; I think her artistic streak defined that for me as a little kid... watching her tote around a Canon or Pentax in a Crown Royal bag. She's got an eye that I can always see. Her mark extends past the undiscriminating lens. The 12 photos she gave for the show were taken for The Architectural League of New York's show on the changing face of New York City. This Friday.

If it weren't for Kevin's CONSTANT tendency to think up wild and fun situations, surprisingly creative, we wouldn't have 5 à 7. It started, in his crazy little head, with 5 rolls of blue painter's tape. It continued with the reverence he has toward our living situation. Drawing lines, mini road-maps around the nooks and crannies of this place. Originally, he wanted to spontaneously invite passerby's in to walk a path around the life-as-art.
His tongue-in-cheek drawings made an appearance, appropriately hung by the food and drinks. When Kevin's not singing, going out to eat, making ridiculously funny statements, or adding dots to the ever-growing and changing dot project-- a wall he envisions covering entirely with dots, he's obsessing over food and wine pairings, reductions, duck à la press; or Pies 'n Thighs, Diner, and/or Marlow & Sons (or Daughters). Yep, foodie (understatement).

 Moi

There's something that happens when I look into eyes. A photo. A person. A face pulls me in like nothing else. Upon it is written... everything words would chase, just barely embrace. I get in a trance with pigments and rendering, cloning almost, arbitrary use of color, very much inspired by those artists who made up Die Brücke.

If you've made it this far, hope to see you at the next show! ;)

If you ain't real about it, don't talk

by trulymadlydeeply On Tuesday, April 20, 2010 0 comments
What is the statute of limitations on life, life events, things you said, things you meant, things you did and wish were dead. What could ever die as long as you're alive? Indeed, what has lived will live far past its self, the shelf on which it was dealt. Nothing ever dies. It just changes shape. Like a golden, spinning, flexible, reflexive, lord of a ring, figure it looping, figure it's 8.
I was on chatroulette, for the first time, one night.  For two hours this Floridian kid and I talked, or didn't, just sat there, oh gosh what was his name?. It was nice. Might sound creepy, but it was real. Why? Because I was real. And so was he. Ugh let me not toot my own horn. But I remember this other night, last summer. I'll get back to chatroulette in a moment. After these not-so-brief messages. I went out to this Bar in New York, the music there that night created a precious element... met a fellow, we talked, chilled, it got mellow, and high, and as I do, when I reach the sky, I riffed and riffed and spoke in tongues and connected with another person's lungs because each breath I took shook this person's world, and mine, truth be told, I say the darndest things, you've got to believe it, no need to see it. But, really, who doesn't? No, I mean, I really say the darndest things! Must have been the Bacchic influence. And now that I've stated it, probably took the edge off of the ability, revealed too much, set a standard, nothing to prove but expressing a groove. Keep moving...About what you may ask does my mouth, not much its the fingers that do the talking on this couch. If I told you, I mean really told you, I'd have to kill it. And I'm on a live trip continuing with the direction I was going in... homie's (he wasn't a homie, really) sitting there, in the same state as me, only I've taken the lead in the matter, get your minds (maybe it's not your minds, maybe it's just my mind, but I'll cover everyone's bases and therein reveal my own, oh jeez does it sound like I'm blown? [not]) out the gutter I'm a lady, not a pitch-and-hit batter. Flash back there we are and he's like, I've never met anyone like you, had this kind of connection, spoken like this with anyone. And I smiled and I thought, this happens more and more, all the time.Ah, les genes! So I said that, probably came off conceited as hell but it was earnest. And in that moment I couldn't have told that he thought me to be so, full of myself, but shoot, what do I know?. Because I talked of THE self, kept it as transparent as glass, reflecting my other half, wholly out of myself. Ugh God, I can be overly earnest. Oscar, you get me, I'll use your cajones. So maybe it is you, "it's not you, it's me", you..You don't need to remember it for it to be a part of your puzzle. And if it made it past your skin, others breathed it in, then there's little chance it won't prevail. As part of the matrix, as woven and contained within. Well, who cares? Ah, but you care. Everyone cares. Caring's the issue, and it's not, tu vois?. How truthful is something that happened in the past when your present is thousands of exits away, tethered nevertheless to that series of non-linear days, mem-o-rays, right up to the now here we go...... What are you building on, little life Jenga (a cat I once had may he rest in peace), let's raze this section right here, the foundation has been compromised, plant a seed in its stead, when stacking gets shaky, back to the Earth.with it, quaking, shivering, shaking.  Can I stick another brick on? Replace the ancestry of an all-too-human race? My life's a brick, a part of the delicate game of pick-up-sticks, it's too late, I'm here, I fit.
Oh yea, and that time on chatroulette -- I won't go in depth, but I heard myself saying, that life is like a wave. positivity cresting, you waiting to catch it, like Clay Marzo magic, oh don't get me started on tsunami dreams.

remnants, remnants
that's all I am
ash reborn from the fruit
of another's hand
a cup,
a life,
empty
half-full
it stands
edges stack
or simply disappear
red is the color
of love, I fear
not the emptiness

Ground Control

Is it coming from the inside? All these problem's Earth's been having. Are we weighing all-too heavy, Mass of man increasing steady. And all the potions we've been whipping, Transferring energy from almost nothing underneath us, Into piles of steel, trash, and make-up, magazines and mate-ups, wars and celebrations. Pounding on the door, knocking for the core, lava there, crumbling here. The pressure points stay safer, effecting change instead in once-obscure locations. Cause-and-effect, could anything ever be something else? Far-off the cracks may start, but home is one for all, so we'll all feel the shock.  Like a pulsing, pounding body, an axis running swiftly, A wing is broken here, flight gets downed there, And the perfect patterns will continue shifting

French-English dictionary may be necessary

It asks, drift off and find, what's on your mind?
Walking through each song, like a stroll - tree-lined avenues
Brass bands with beats to spare

Sparks are falling from magnetic metal rooftops
that JMZ track shakin the-
City snakes its way
into lively dwellers' skin
Skim the surface of the beautiful mess
they're living in
Further the numbers they climb,
Harder for some to find that piece of mind
Alienated did he call it?
Bars across their windows
So they slip downstairs
Into the after-hours darkness
For a drink to keep 'em company
In this town built on steel
Time to trim these tips,
Split out ends and make our way
past those man-made debts
subtle incongruousness
Building blocks, the sunlight
Now seeps from underneath
This garden of adapted souls
Making the most of their shadow goals

Liner Notes From My Dreams

by trulymadlydeeply On Tuesday, March 02, 2010 0 comments
photography, shots slide across the screen for a crowd to see
sitting smiling peacefully with a monument, its magnitude of beauty- focused centrally
in the corner, reclining with the scene
a face, my face
then 4 pairs of legs walk across a stage
scrutinizing two mojoin pins, removed from my possession
with a pair of eyes, and a single lens
and hundreds of others viewing past-present tense
vacation shots of a life
lived spontaneously
this photographer, where did he come from
we ran into him on the street
at an intersection of time gone by in the windshield,
spinnin round a traffic circle eye
from where he began to follow me
questioning the playbacks
does he see what I see?
and from the crowd a man, seemingly a professor
professed this love to me:
the id doesn't like it when a mirror's not around
try to sleep without one
see if you can stand your ground
so of course upon my waking,
I realize the space, blank
thereupon my childhood bedroom wall where one had hung, now displaced
then spoke a need to see this id encased
according to a Freudian kind of studied taste
but right before I rose up and out
from the cacophony of the raw
a boy in this dream I know asked me, please
make me anxious tonight
I have some work proposals that I need to write
my dreaming id understood it perfectly
over-seeing this unknown churning underbelly
catharsis dream-work delivered intentionally

Justify center

Between my head and my heart, this voice
Between being and seeming, the choice
Between the lies we tell ourselves in the pursuit of the truth, trials
Between the image of heaven and realities of earth, redemption on our knees
Freedom and the sweetness of a warm cage, flying back and forth hardly passing through the open door
Protection from the weather and pursuit of coursing adventure, a jacket
and those drops roll off your back
Private language and monopolies over thought
Where nothing is truly hidden
Except for the attempts at covering up
Giving to those who provide the most in return
and packaging precious parcels for investment’s sake
postponed quality controls,
an ultimate quality never to be known
it's the feeling,
standing on its own

when I cry the tears always start from my right eye
because sadness won’t betray my dry personality
while the only thing that gets me talking is an oral fixation
and the only thing that’s stayed the same is changin
right in front of me this moment is changin

wind blowing every which way,

one hand steering,
the other rhythmically careening,
running, floating, gliding like waves along music invading the fragrant 60mph air

Preface to The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

The artist is the creator of beautiful things.
To reveal art and conceal the artist is art's aim.
The critic is he who can translate into another manner or a new material his impression of beautiful things.
The highest as the lowest form of criticism is a mode of autobiography.
Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming. This is a fault.
Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope.
They are the elect to whom beautiful things mean only beauty.
There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That
            is all.
The nineteenth century dislike of realism is the rage of Caliban seeing his own face in a glass.
The moral life of man forms part of the subject-matter of the artist, but the morality of art consists in
the perfect use of an imperfect medium.
No artist desires to prove anything. Even things that are true can be proved.
No artist has ethical sympathies. An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style.
No artist is ever morbid. The artist can express everything.
Thought and language are to the artist instruments of an art.
Vice and virtue are to the artist materials for an art.
From the point of view of form, the type of all the arts is the art of the musician. From the point of view of feeling, the actor's craft is the type.
All art is at once surface and symbol.
Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril.
Those who read the symbol do so at their peril.
It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors.
Diversity of opinion about a work of art shows that the work is new, complex, and vital.
When critics disagree, the artist is in accord with himself.
We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely.
                             All art is quite useless.

"For your consideration:
“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way."
Which is why we should never allow our limitations or fears to deflect us from a noble goal. You just never know what might happen if you get out of your own way...."

Normal(ish) Before

Fingerprinted-me After

This little piece results from a surprisingly fun discovery while, most happily, playing around in Paint.

Splicing and dicing this Empire State Scene, layering, breaking open new dimensions, with a simple select and drag, searching for planes and levels to make a little nonsense, new sense from of the fairly flat shadow and light of this city of dreams' night-time skyline.

I got found in this piecing together and breaking down, gained sight by the loss of standard recognitions to new forms.

A particularly fun semi-challenge was finding the means to make a letter V. Everything was strictly linear, both in the limitations of Paint and the architecture snapped. I managed to seek out a curve in the reflection off the glass, flipped and rotated, shrunk and sidled up to render that most diagonal of letters.

Shout out to Dan Flavin and Robert Indiana; Jay-Z and Alicia Keys; The Futurists and cubo-futurism; astronomers and their epic star burst captures; my love for Neon, stark contrasts, and Paint. Oh, and Lesego.

Lesson 138

by trulymadlydeeply On Friday, January 08, 2010 0 comments

That Sun

Whatever you love here in existence
Has been gold-plated by God's qualities;
When that gold goes back to Origin
Only a dull copper will remain,
And you will be disgusted and reject it.
Don’t go on calling counterfeit coin "beautiful"
That beauty you love is only borrowed.
Gold will abandon all surfaces in the end
And return to the Mine of Magnificence.
Why not set out for that Mine?
The light will return from the wall to the sun;
Go now to that Sun that dances always in harmony.
From now on, take your water from heaven directly
Why go on trusting a rusting drainpipe?

RUMI

I love this poem in particular, out of the 365, 227 of which I've yet to recieve, this one's moving me today because it speaks to my constant return to the theme of direct contact, unadulterated and pure conference.

When you can remember the taste of truth, as obtained by you, many middle men fail to sell same. Somehow I feel like everyone knows the shape of what is Mine.

Is it theirs or yours?
Why go on trusting a rusting drainpipe?

far and away, again
repetition hypnotic

influence of distance, a vessel; an unmoving invisible medium, like never really there
passing clean,
transfers a pushing and pulling
bumping and swinging

Names
Big names in lights
My neck hurts from looking up at them
How had society convinced me that's the place they should be, my eyes, those flashbulb lights
There's really only one thing I want to look up to
A sky filled with light, clouds, birds, I don't care,
Whatever nature seeks to serve.
As for the humans,
Accomplished as they may be
Their pedastals are breaking necks, resting on backs
And those necks will tear them down
For their own chance at wearing a crown.
No.
No no no no no.
Look around you, there's angels amongst us
And the glorified sirs and madames,
Step down gracefully
Admit this isn't what you wanted, entirely
The other end of the equation will cede mercifully

Maybe He was created by those ancient wisemen,
Observing well the follies of Kings and Pharoahs
So that in our futures, we wouldn't do this to each other
To ourselves.
Easier to revere
A man whose course you simply cannot steer
Without
Steering yourself
Right?
We do it anyway
Still in vain, in the Name of _ _ _ ... _ _ _ _ _
Pressure to choose yourself to be chosen
So heavy.
Even when it happens naturally,
Hands of fate guiding steadily
Lead us to the truths
Hearts breaking in cardiac arrest

Can't pretend to know the answer
In what these eyes have only seen
Being's another elixir
Experience 'living the dream',
Your dream
Don't leave a detail out
Imagine as much as you can
What's your limit? The limit? His, her, their limit?
Half of the discovery is, testing that question
Evolutionarily unknown progress
Moving forward nonethelesss
Rationally sensible
Consciously
Chaotically
Soon to change its meaning,
Chaos more than
Order moving in reverse
Uniting this blessing and the curse

Not in the same place we started here, are we?
